An Android Game System From Nvidia is Coming Soon
What do you get when you cross an Xbox controller with a five-inch Android tablet with beefy stereo speakers? Nvidia’s new touch-screen portable gaming system, code-named Project Shield. The handheld game system was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show this month in Las Vegas, and it could spell more bad news for the Sony Vita, Nintendo 3DS or any other entry in the mobile gaming market. Why? Because it further stretches how consumers can buy and experience video games.
Today, a huge news from google, “Google once again selling the Nexus 4 in the US, Canada, Germany, more locations to come soon (update)”
Though the Nexus 4 has been missing from the Google Play Store for weeks now, Google has confirmed to us today that it is now offering it for sale in Germany, with plans to sell it in other countries in the near future. The Nexus 4 originally went on sale back in November and quickly sold out, with supply issues making availability of it very scarce since then. LG, the manufacturer of the device, was initially blamed for the shortage, and it confirmed recently that it was ramping up production to meet the overwhelming demand. Google says that it plans to offer it for sale in markets other than Germany very soon; we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.
Update: It looks like the Nexus 4 is now available for purchase in both 8GB and 16GB options (as well as its official bumper case, if you’re into that sort of thing) in the US and Canadian stores as well. Google says that shipping times for devices ordered today are one to two weeks, but sources tell us that orders should be going out to customers even quicker than that.
Smartphone shipments surged by 38% during 2012 and reached a staggering 217 million devices in the fourth quarter alone. Of those 217 million, 92% are running either Android or iOS, according to Strategy Analytics. In other words, Microsoft, RIM and others are fighting over scraps.
Globally, hardware makers shipped 700.1 million smartphones during 2012, which is up significantly from the 490 million shipped during 2011.
“We estimate 152.1 million Android smartphones were shipped globally in Q4 2012, nearly doubling from 80.6 million units in Q4 2011,” said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics. “Android’s share of the global smartphone market has surged from 51% to 70% over the past year, crushing Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake. Almost half-a-billion Android smartphones were shipped in total worldwide during 2012. Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time.”
Temple Run 2 is a sequel to one of the first big 3D endless-running games on iOS and Android devices. Smartphone and tablet users downloaded the original more than 170 million times across all platforms. Disney partnered with Imangi Studios, the game’s developer, to capitalize on the popularity for a version of the game branded to promote the Pixar movie Brave. More than 500,000 users downloaded that version for 99 cents.
While Temple Run 2 is free to download, it jumped as high as No. 2 on Apple App Store’s top-grossing apps chart. The original game on iOS went for 99 cents when it launched, but quickly switched to a free-to-play model that greatly increased its revenue.
It took a week after the iOS release for Imangi to get Temple Run 2 out on Android. Fans of the series might feel like that was a long wait, but it’s minuscule compared to the six-month gap between when iPhone got the original and when Android did.
Developer Imangi Studios just told GamesBeat that its newest title is finally live on Google’s mobile operating system. It’s available on the Google Play market and Amazon Appstore for free. The popular game launched on iOS last week where it reached 20 million downloads in just four days.
